The reigning Valley Champion Clovis Cougar softball team started the 2018 season off with a bang as senior starting pitcher Danielle Lung threw a perfect game and the team defeated Pacheco High Panthers of Los Banos 5-0.

For the second time in her four-year career at Clovis High, Fresno State signee Lung pitched a perfect game in which she held the opposing team to no hits, no walks, and the team had no errors.

“I put a lot of time and hard work in at practice and also the team’s energy held me up for the whole seven innings while they had my back for any ball that got hit. Also, my catcher Jordyn Martinez was in front of me catching and blocking any balls,” said Lung.

Senior shortstop Tori Mueller added, “Danielle pitched a heck of a game and even with the few weak grounders, the girls behind her were able to make their routine plays.”

Although the Panthers did not register a single base runner the entire seven inning game, the Cougar offense crossed home plate once in the first inning and four more times in the fifth inning to accumulate their five run win.

“Offensively it took us awhile to get going but once we did, we were unstoppable,” said senior catcher Jordyn Martinez.

The Cougar offense was sparked with the help of senior Tori Mueller (2-3), senior Ashley Kincaid (two runs and a double), senior Elaine Caballero (2-3), senior Jordyn Martinez (double and a run scored), and senior Emily Puente (double and a run scored).

Coming off of a season in which they defeated Central High in the Valley Championship at Fresno State’s Margie Wright Diamond, the team has high hopes at the beginning of this season.

“As a group I think our expectation is obviously to do as good as last year. We have a lot of returners and we expect to have lots of dubs,” said Martinez.

Mueller added, “We have the talent to go far, it just depends on how much work we want to put in so we can end up on top, and I expect this team to get there.”

The Cougars will face off against the Centennial Golden Hawks of Bakersfield Thursday before hosting the Clovis Lead-Off Classic starting Saturday, March 10.
