The Clovis High Cougars softball team improved to 18-2 on the season when they defeated the Buchanan Bears 5-2 in the first league game of the 2018 season.

The Cougars were led by winning pitcher Danielle Lung (13-0, 15 strikeouts) along with top hitters Tori Mueller (RBI), Jordyn Martinez (2-3, two runs, HR, RBI), Emily Puente (RBI, 1 run), and Maddy Arnold (2-4, RBI).

CHS was able to take advantage of the BHS pitching by getting numerous hits which sparked their offensive attack and saw them raking up five runs in the ball game.

Senior catcher Jordyn Martinez said, “We got a lot of hits throughout the game. We put people in scoring position and often came through with the clutch hits that we needed to.”

“We had a good idea of what we were going to be pitched so when the time came, we jumped on [the pitcher] quickly, putting runners in scoring position every inning,” added senior shortstop Tori Mueller.

The Cougars offense was only half of what got them the win. The pitching by senior Danielle Lung was the other half which allowed them to keep their comfortable lead as she was, yet again, almost unhittable.

Mueller said, “[Lung] really kept us in it so we could do our jobs and score runs.”

Although the girls are already twenty games into the season, the real challenge –TRAC season– has just begun and the Cougars are ready and hopeful to repeat last year’s success.

“It feels great to have the first league win behind us,” said Martinez, “If we continue to play like we did last night then we should have a pretty successful season and I would say as a team we all have the same goal and that’s to win in May.”

“We need to keep ourselves on an upward grind instead of a downward fall,” Mueller added.

The Cougars will be hosted by Clovis East (1-12-3) to continue league play on Friday, April 13.
