The cheerleading teams completed another successful year after winning Valleys and breaking records. The teams celebrated the season with an awards ceremony on Monday, May 14.

“It was fun,” said junior Katelyn Malcolm who competes on the Pep and Cheer team. “I love being with my girls. It got emotional knowing this was the seniors’ last awards, but I had a great time with them.”

How the awards are set up is that each cheer team gets its own table. Each table assigned to that team is decorated and designed by the cheerleaders’ parents. The night is more like a ceremony as the girls dress up and enjoy the conclusion of their season with their teammates.

The Competition cheer team received plaques describing its achievements on the journey to a Valley championship.

But those were not the only awards that were given out that evening as senior Samantha Gamez was awarded the Coaches award of the Pep and Cheer squad and senior Triana Vang won the prestigious Mealer award.

“A lot of seniors were winning awards that night so I wasn’t too shocked I won, but I’m very happy,” said Gamez. “It was nice to be recognized by the coach for the hard work I have put in over the past four years.”

“I was so extremely happy,” said Vang after winning the Mealer award. The Mealer award is cheers version of the Sassano blanket that is passed on to in other sports. “I really didn’t expect to win. We had a lot of really talented and amazing girls that were deserving of it.”

Cheer had a phenomenal year and the team coaches now set their eyes to next and prepare for the incoming class and win more titles and break more records.
